My mother is 89 and has not had an appetite for a year, but even worse since having a small stroke. Feeding her is like feeding a toddler, but I cannot rely on her eating when she is hungry like I did with my children and grandchildren when they were toddlers.

Yikes, this is the third time I am answering this question as I have lost my satellite connection twice now. What I was saying is that we had the same problem with my father. We solved the problem by making him delicious and nutritious milkshakes, putting banana, raw egg, cooked oatmeal, wheatgerm, milk, a little icecream, strawberries, blueberries and anything else you can think of for variety ( carrot juice, apple sauce, all kinds of soft foods)
My father actually gained weight on this and looked forward to his treat. I think it is an effort chewing when you get to that age. Try the straw method and my heart goes out to you. You are a wonderful, wonderful daughter!! A beautiful human being! Your mother is so lucky to have you. Lots of love. Jen

Try giving small bites of food such as like ice cream and such. And also talk to your mom's dr for some help with this to see what they suggest.

My grandma died in 2000 at the age of 91 and toward the end it was a lot like taking care of a toddler because of the dementia process.

Check out the Alzheimer's and Dementia board at WebMD as well. There's a nurse there that runs the board and she may be able to help as well.

If your mom's dr is not a geriatric specialist I would recommend having one evaluate her and help with treatments and ways to help her eat.

Please, go to her dr. and speak with him/her about your mom and the stroke, asap. . Also, please get a referral to a nutritionist-that person can help you with meal planning, and ways to help her eat. Make the foods taste good to her. Take care.
