The cheapest tHing you can do is change the transmission fluid and filter, not just the oil in the pan but all 12 to 14 quarts, many times the fluid will have varnish build up and cause sticking solenoids and also cause bad shifting, some tines even being low on fluid Will cause it, other things since you didn't mention the year are bad modulator valves or a vacuum leak, TRy the fluid first. but if your not to savvy on transmissions take it to a shop and they will charge $150.0 for the service and a lot of times it will make it run like new. there are also bad adjustments on older model cares as well. but you did not mention the year, if its a electronic control ed system it could be many tHINGs that i WON'T GET INTO.

What year and model car is it? Is the transmission manual or automatic? How many miles on the car?
Please, we need specifics if we're going to answer your question. The answer varies from car to car.

FIRST OF ALL CHECK YOUR FLUID.SECOND SMELL THE FLUID ON THE DIP STICK IF IT SMELLS BURNT YOU SHOULD NOT CHANGE THE OIL JUST THE FILTER.
BECAUSE THE OIL HAS ALL THEPARTICALS YOUR TRANNY IS LOOSING AND IF YOU CHANGE IT YOUR SLIPPING PROBLEM WILL GET WORSE.
