Education has a direct effect on poverty. If you observe almost all BPL families have a minimum of 5 children. A lot of them will keep having children until they a get a male. So here you have a couple both working as daily wage labourers having 5 to 6 mouths to feed.
To educate these people funds are needed. With corruption so visible in our system it is a miracle if these funds are properly used. So you see to reduce or eradicate poverty, corruption needs to be checked.

"poverty" is a social construct.
poverty, meaning lack of money, is not the problem.
the problem is that many people in India do not have adequate access to safe drinking water, food, shelter, and health care.
these things can easily be fixed, but it is not in the interest of the entrenched hegemonic powers (both the rich in India, and the rich of the West who control the world economy) to do so.
a more important thing we should be doing is reducing the consumption of the world's wealthy people (and yes, that includes nearly everyone in America, because all of us...even the "poor" in Ameirca...consume far more than our share of the world's resources).
We need to dismantle the hierarchical power structures which keep the powerful in control.
We need to disestablish the state system because government breeds abuse and subjugation.
We need to institute libertarian socialism (otherwise known as anarchism), where all decisions are made collectively at the local level by autonomous communities.
Local communities are the best for decicing how to allocate and maintain their resources.
We need to dismantle the global economy because it is bringing ruin upon the world.

We can start by working to eradicate the existing class (caste) system that relegates 80% of the population to the status of slaves or less than human. 250 million "untouchables" (Dalits) have no spiritual, economic, or political rights. A country where this kind of discrepancy is still allowed to exist has a long way to go in order to become a "developed" nation.
One organization working to provide schooling to Dalit children is the Dalit Freedom Network. Their goal is to establish Dalit Education Centres across India. So far, they have funded 5 schools and are currently raising support for a 6th. Please visit http://www.givemeaning.com/donate/p-project.aspx?gg=879 and vote to support the project (no donation required) so they can go ahead and start raising the funds. Thanks!

OLD VERSION...
The ant works hard in the withering heat all summer long building his
house
and laying up supplies for the winter. The grasshopper thinks the ant's
a
fool and laughs & dances & plays the summer away. Come winter, the ant
is
warm and well fed. The grasshopper has no food or shelter so he dies
out
in
the cold.
MODERN VERSION
The ant works hard in the withering heat all summer long, building his
house
and laying up supplies for the winter. The grasshopper thinks the ant's
a
fool and laughs & dances & plays the summer away. Come winter, the
shivering
grasshopper calls a press conference and demands to know why the ant
should
be allowed to be warm and well fed while others are cold and starving.
NDTV, BBC, CNN show up to provide pictures of the shivering grasshopper
next
to a video of the ant in his comfortable home with a table filled with
food.
The World is stunned by the sharp contrast. How can this be that this
poor
grasshopper is allowed to suffer so?
Arundhati Roy stages a demonstration in front of the ant's house. Medha
Patkar goes on a fast along with other grasshoppers demanding that
grasshoppers be relocated to warmer climates during winter. Amnesty
International and Koffi Annan criticize the Indian Government for not
upholding the fundamental rights of the grasshopper.
The Internet is flooded with online petitions seeking support to the
grasshopper (many promising Heaven and Everlasting Peace for prompt
support
as
against the wrath of God for non-compliance). Opposition MP's stage a
walkout.Left parties call for "Bharat Bandh" in West Bengal and Kerala
demanding a
Judicial Enquiry. CPM in Kerala immediately passes a law preventing
Ants
from working hard in the heat so as to bring about equality of poverty
among
ants and grasshoppers.
Lalu Prasad allocates one free coach to Grasshoppers on all Indian
Railway
Trains, aptly named as the 'Grasshopper Rath'.
Finally, the Judicial Committee drafts the Prevention of Terrorism
Against
Grasshoppers Act [POTAGA]", with effect from the beginning of the
winter.
Arjun Singh makes Special Reservation for Grass Hopper in educational
Insititutions & in Govt Services.
The ant is fined for failing to comply with POTAGA and, having nothing
left
to pay his retroactive taxes, his home is confiscated by the Government
and
handed over to the grasshopper in a ceremony covered by NDTV.
Arundhati Roy calls it "a triumph of justice". Lalu calls it
'Socialistic
Justice'. CPM calls it the 'revolutionary resurgence of the
downtrodden'.
Koffi Annan invites the grasshopper to address the UN General Assembly.
Many years later...The ant has since migrated to the US and set up a
multi-billion dollar company in silicon valley.100s of grasshoppers
still
die of starvation despite reservation somewhere in India...
As a result losing lot of hard working ants and feeding the
grasshoppers,
India is still a developing country...... Can any one dare to bring
India
out of this clutches?

A Good question which need immediate answer. I think poverty could be eradicated only when the youth shoulder their responsibilities.Employment opportunities should be created& there should be no illiteracy.Self employment should be encouraged.banks must assist those who engage themselves in self employment. Migration to foriegn countries should be curbed off.brain drain should be avoided. All this would defenitely decrease poverty in the country.

Thanks for your concern for the deteriorating economic status of India.
If the state of concern could prevail with the politicians , industrialists, star actors and sports persons and the filthy rich section of India , India would be able to wipe out poverty with in a decade or two.
But, at present, day light loot and robbery of the poor by the rich is going on .Rich are becoming richer and poor are becoming poorer both happening at much higher speed.
At this rate , days are not far off to see India in such a pathetic situation as predicted by you.
But, to retrive India is in the hands of four pillars of Democracy namely,
1)Legislative,
2)Judiciary,
3)Administrative (and the fourth estate called )
4)The Media.
apart from from the filthy rich (heard of a wedding card costing Rs.5000/=) comprising of actors(earning in crores of rupees for few hours of acting in coke/pepsi advt.films),
Sports persons,
and Industrialists.
Hope Gods of the world will save India from these people and agencies of Democracy, apart from the onslaught of Americans and their associates.

there is enough to satisy every man's need but not to satisfy any bodies greed.. the difference between need and greed has to be understood before trying to tackle this situation.. you cant enrich some one by giving them money or material.. give a man fish, you feed him for the day.. teach him to fish, you feed him for life! governament policies cant succeed if we as citizens do not endeavour to search our conscience and participate actively in bringing about a change! empowerment leads to enrichment and not the other way around.. other wise how do you explain communisms failure?.. in the end, what steps, we - individually and collectively take in the right direction decides the fate of the country..
