hi all,
I have a job offer to move to Durban (SA), and I need to know how is life there. is it safe? has good nightlife? good nature trails? kind people? where to live? is there something I must request from the company? etc. If I can get some links about it or how is the life of a foreigner over there I will appreciate.

thanks

I think South Africa is a great place to visit. Many tourists are visiting the country and provided they are sensible, living there can be good fun.

Depending on your job's pay, you should live very well. Food is cheap, vacations are cheap, housing is cheap and the cost of unskilled labour is cheap. Cars ar expensive though

So I'll paint the pretty picture first and suggest that you go to the Kwa Zulu website to have a look at the attractions and potential holidays you can have.

On the realistic side, this country has challenges, and you need to be conscious of security and health . In the priviledged areas it's no problem - much the same as Europe or the US. Security firms and companies sending staff ther will brief and protect you well, so follow their advice.

Durban is a great place to stay, I stay and work just to the North of Durban, moved here from Pretoria 2 years ago. Absolutely love it. People are friendly the beaches are awesome and the weather is the best in the world.

Depending on where you will be working there is really a couple of nice places to stay to the north there is Umhlanga and Ballito both very nice and reasonable save. but maybe a bit pricey (don't get much for under R1,5 mil)

I will not lie and tell you that there is no crime, but I feel safer in Durban and area than what I felt in Pretoria/Johannesburg. I have survived in South Africa for 30 years and enjoyed every second of it. It is a great country with great opportunities.

Wow, you’re lucky, I grew up there... I wish for a job offer there! Durban is an easy going place and everybody s really relaxed. The climate is very mild; it hardly gets cold (except to the locals!). The best neighborhoods to reside in are definitely Westville and Cowies Hill, because they are established and not too far from Durban and not too far from Pinetown. A great mall called Pavilion is situated in Westville also. The nightlife is awesome and the beaches are amazing.

Good luck with your decisions

superedge: Durban is brilliant!!! I was born and raised in Durban, worked around the country, but there's no place like Durbs! It has a great city life, friendly atmosphere. Don't know about Nature trails, might have to go to the 'Valley of a Thousand Hills' out of Pinetown for that.
Depends on what you and the wife do for entertainment. Whatever it is though, you will find it in Durbs. Check out these sites...

Enjoy SA!!

I've lived in Durban and it's a lovely lovely place to live! It's got that city buzz / vibe but its also got the beach so it's also chilled out - its a good mix. there are lovely places to live: go for Durban North area or La lucia or Westville / Hillcrest area (little bit out of city centre but you dont want to live in city centre anyway - worth the drive in). It's about two hours away from game farms where you can go for weekends on a safari, it's about half an hour drive away from beach towns, such as Balitto / salt rock which are great for weekend get aways. There are great shopping centres, gateway, la lucia mall etc. It's also close to the Drakensberg (about 2 - 3hr drive) which is mountains and beautiful hotels and resorts, or you can go camping there - gorgeous nature tails etc.
enjoy!

durban is a awsome place to be!! they have one of the biggest malls in SA called gateway, the night life is awsome and whenever its a puplic holiday there's a huge party on the beach, as for safety i suggest you dont go to chatsworth!! lots of indians live in durban so the people are quite friendly

Snowman couldn't have put it better... i back him 100%
but be weary of some of the people who are bound to answer your Q, giving you atrocious info that would discourage you... some don't even live here in SA and aren't worth listening to... Snowmans point is fair... he isn't promising a Utopia/heaven... he's merely stating pros and cons...mwah! all the best with the job and move... Durbs is lovely, I'm sure you'll love it.
