my pediatrician said that hiccups are a sign their diaphragm is fully developed and working well. it's nothing to worry about. my daughter is now 4 months and she still gets them at least 4 times a week now (she had them almost daily if not more for 2 months).

oh and CONGRATULATIONS on the new baby!!!

I agree. If you start feeding him anything other than breastmilk or formula, you'll be messing with his hunger/feeding cycle, and that'll affect his sleep cycle. That's NOT what you want right now.

As painful as it looks, the hiccups probably aren't hurting him at all. The faces are just muscle contractions... The other suggestions are good... try burping him a little more... don't jostle him around... after all, hiccups are caused by a disruption in the breathing pattern of the diaphragm muscle... so excess gas or rapid movement, including "bouncing" could cause it, because those things mess with how he breathes... (i.e., most newborns gulp air when it hits their face... giving them gas and/or hiccups. Some even get the hiccups after their bath, because they gulp or gasp at the temperature difference between the water and the air.. it's a new sensation for them and they'll gasp every time they feel cool air on their wet skin.)

So... burp him more. Cover his face whenever you're outside or near a fan. Keep him warm while you're bathing him. Don't jostle him around a lot. Don't "bounce" while you're holding him... soothing side-to-side motions are probably better.

His diaphragm muscle will soon get stronger and be able to better regulate itself.

Until then? Hang in there, Mom!

My son is 5 months now and always has the hiccups even when when I was pregnant too. I wouldn't give him water yet until his stomach is stronger and okay by your doctor to give him water. I always give him gripe water after I fed him. Helps the upset stomachs and gas. Or if you are breastfeeding helps too. It doesn't hurt him if he has the hiccups, it is very common for babies to have them. Congratulations on your little bundle of joy.

You should not give water to 10 day old. The baby is too young. Hiccups do not bother babies, they bother us. Something that you can do for such a small baby is gently blow into his face, burp him or just hold him up right. Every newborn hiccups allot, more info available at http://www.mommytips.com/article/ybt/experts/pedqa/hiccups.htm

Def listen to the RN. And like said above burp him a lot. Also, you should check with his doctor and make sure he doesn't have acid reflux which can cause hiccups.

10-15 Hiccups daily is normal for new born babies. My daughter did the same & I was so worried but it endedafter 1 or 2 weeks.
What to do?If it is time to feed him, give him milk and it will be o.k.
If it is not,put one cube sugar in 30cc boiled warm water and give it to baby by milk bottle.
To prevent hiccups,If you feed him by milk bottle ,keep the bottle in a way that prevent giving him air with the milk.
Good luck

My baby is 10 days old too and has them constantly. Glad to hear someone else has the same concern. Everything i have read says that its normal and is not related to feeding practices. They do seem to keep him awake if he has just fed. It is hard to hear him hiccup endlessly though.

jus a sip of cold nursery water worked my son. everytime he had hiccups, i would give it to him and within minutes, they would be gone. my son gets them when hes cold. I jus put warm pajamas on him too and that would keep them away. my son had hiccups everyday when i was pregnant especially during the last months.
