There are pros and cons to All wheel Drive (AWD). Having all wheel drive means that the engine powers all four wheels when driving and you can't switch to just 2 wheel drive. There are different kinds of intelligent awd out there that has sensors to check when a wheel looses grip and it changes the amount of power send to the wheels in order to correct the problem. Each amnufacturer has it's own awd system.
The pros of awd are:
- better traction(especially in rain, snow or drag racing lol)
Cons
- car weighs more and so it will get worse gas mileage
- there are more powertrain parts and is more prone to breaking especially in a standard thansmission that's not driven nice
- an awd car usually costs a couple thousands more as compared with the same car with fwd or rwd
- most awd cars for sale are also turbocharged wich adds another cost problem for fuel efficiency, maintenance and expensive fixes.
Feel free to add on to either side of the comparison.
PS. I wouldn't buy an awd car unless I'd spend a lot of time on snow. Other then that there's no advantage

Same as 4 wheel drive, except for 2 details: you can't shift out of 4 wheel drive (and usually have no low range), and you usually have a viscus coupling for the front wheels (meaning that although you get power to the front wheels as well as the rear, the rear wheels will almost always get more power -how much more varies, depending on what the vehicle is doing, traction available at that moment, etc.)

More to pay when you buy the vehicle, more to pay on mainteinence, higher chance to have drive train problem on transimission. If someone Tow you car with the method of lifting up 2 wheel, the entire drive train of transmission will break. Cost hella to fix. More pay in the gastation.
If you live in an area thats seldom snow or no snow at all, then you are wasting money to buy it.
Pro? better tractions on heavy snow, less likely to get stuck. Because all 4 wheels is moving. For it to get stuck, then all 4 wheels have to lose traction instead of 2.

It means all wheels are used to propel the car forward or backwards. It helps the car drive in the snow. What if your car was back wheel drive and both the back wheels were stuck? Then your car cant get out of its rut. But, if it was all wheel drive, then it has a better chance to get out of the rut....

All wheel drive means it's a 4x4 but most likely full time four wheel drive. Four wheelers cost more money to own and operate unless you need it for some reason I would recommend not getting it.
