I lost my hearing four years ago and I've put off learning to speak because I remember from my hearing days that deaf speakers tend to sound a bit..... um..... wot's a nice way of putting this?..... mentally deficient.

I've tried a bit of speaking around mates, and I tend to curse out loud and people keep saying that I sound like I'm crying.

It would be a bit simpler for communicating with hearing people, but I'm quite selfconscious about it.

Yeah I hate to say this, but deaf people usually sound very weird when they try to talk. Sometimes its too loud, sometimes theyre too self-conscious and its too soft, but mostly I guess its just because they cant hear themselves that it sounds so strange (and usually more high-pitched for some reason). Sorry I cant be of more help...

Good luck to you

IN general deaf people who never have heard anything tend to sound like they have a cold or nose congestion. Otherwise they are pretty normal. Occasionally they will not get a complex word pronounced correctly but then again I have a similar problem and I can hear very well.

I think deaf people sound deaf when they talk. I actually love hearing Marlee Matlin speak, and I'm going to see her give a lecture next week. Lose the self consciousness and just be yourself. I'm sure you sound just fine. :-)

Just be yourself, my friend, - that's all you can do. But, PLEASE, don't give up. You don't mention, how old you are, but, - more than TWENTY YEARS ago, - a friend of mine lost HER hearing, through ILLNESS, - she is now, PROFOUNDLY DEAF, - but, until she TOLD me, - I had NO IDEA! You will, - with TIME, - and PATIENCE, - grow, in terms of your confidence! I wish you all the LUCK IN THE WORLD!
