Just because he didn't have a career year in HRs doesn't mean that steroids didn't help. part of it is psychological, and maybe they gave him confidence. Also, a good prequel of power potential or increase in power is doubles. He had 44 last year, and his career average in doubles, in a 162 game season, including last year, is still only 29. 35.6% of his hits were for extra bases, so he wasn't exactly a "singles" hitter. To compare, carlos lee, for example, averaged around 40.1%, so to write Mathews off as a singles hitter in unfair.
What i find odd and frustrating is that if he is on the roids, how come he didn't test positive. I question the efficiency of the testing system in place. I still find it sad the extent people will go through to get an upper hand.

Steroids don't help you hit the ball more consistently. It just shows that some people don't understand that you could be juiced up on everything and still not hit a ton of homeruns, a lot goes into hitting besides just how strong you are. If a player wants to go and take steroids and ruin their bodies, they can go right ahead and do it, it's their problem. I just wanna watch baseball and not have to hear about this stuff everyday, if he tested positive suspend him, if he didn't, let it go, rumors are just rumors. It shouldn't be a big media phenomenon every time a baseball player tests postive or is thought to have taken them. They either did or they didn't.

Unfortunate that he was doing roids. However as probably said by some previous answerers, Matthews good season last year had nothing to do with roids. It's not like he was Ryan Howard busting out 58 homerruns. He was a mostly singles hitter.

Gary Mathew's good year last year can not be attributed to steriods, whether he took them or not. Steriods add strength, and as such would be pretty useless for a singles hitter, unless he wants to develop more power. Mathew's increased production was not an increase in power, but in consistancy (he hit 19 home runs playing in a notorious hitters park in Texas.)

Well, this is all alleged. He's not busted, yet. But it makes a lot of sense. He was in his contract year, and a career year just got him a $50M deal.
What's sad (if he did it) is, he only hit 19 homeruns on steroids? COME ON, Matthews!

I think the Angels should be able to void his contract because they're not going to get what they paid for.

Well, its not really that much of a surprise, is it? Honestly? Steroids are stupid, unless used for a MEDICAL purpose... not to "Enhance" your performance! lol, have an awesome day!!! =)
