All my devices that used to be plug and play, now only take me to the "found hardware wizard", which can never find the correct drivers. I'm using Windows XP, and these very same devices used to work just fine. Is there anything that I can do, short of re-formatting my hard drive? Please help, cuz I need to use my flash drive and media reader soon!

log on as administrator, click start and run then Devmgmt.msc click ok to open device manager double click drives right click the installed drive and click update driver.
select install from list, click next select don't search, click next click plug and playdrive click next then click finish.
i had to do this for a monitor, so it should be the same for the drives. if it doesn't work go to msn, sign in, search for computer club, general board, and post your question there. there's a bunch of geeks who answer all kinds of computer problems. they'll want you to run the belarc advisor to find the hardware configuration you have. do that and post it to the question as an add on file.

I had the same problem just recently I have a windows xp myself all my ports went down, dvd player, opt drives usb ports. Anyways I called Acer my computer manufacturer and he kind of put me through the motions I was able to get them back up by removing the the ports and then rebooting my system. The down side of this I lost a previous info that I had stored on the system. Now instead I have backed up my drivers so if it does happen again I won't lose my informtion. Go to properties click hardware then device manager it will give you a list of all drivers on the system, Be careful of this if you do delete these from the device manager you might not get in back unless you have got a good back up but they should go after you reboot the systems.
Its a little confusing may I suggest you check with the manufacturer of the computer instead of me trying to explain it, If I had to I could do it but trying to explain the steps like I said that's the comfusing part.

You'll need to find out the drivers for them. Even plug and play items sometimes require drivers. Did you do anything to your computer to make this start coming up? Like re-installing windows(which shouldn't really effect it anyway)?
Either get the drivers off the software supplied with the items or search for them on www.drivers.com or google. make sure you find the latest version of the drivers and that you have specified the correct model of the hardware when you search for it.

Which Plug n Play devices are you referring to?
You need not format the drive....just install the Windows XP Upgrade not the New Installation.

*IF* the drivers for the media reader are showing in Device Manager with either a Yellow & Black ! or Red X, REMOVE them.

Then, shutdown (NOT RESTART) computer, wait at least 2 minutes or so, then turn computer on and see if Windows finds and installs the drivers correctly.
