I don't know how true this is but I heard that George Washington didn't smile a whole lot because he had wooden teeth. That's what made him look grouchy -- he didn't smile much.

maybe he doesn't like being squeezed onto a coin. maybe he'd rather spread out on a $1 bill. or maybe the glare of the coin hurts his eyes.
