I have a 1982 KZ440 that the starter has gone out on. I've been looking on ebay and I found a cheap starter for a KZ400 from '75. The casings look identical and should bolt right up and I know that kz400's are almost identical mechanically to 440's.

Can anyone verify that this'll work?

You might save money by having your starter motor rebuilt.
Look in the Yellow Pages for "electric motor repair".
I've had them repaired for $150

Like guardrail jim says, you could have it repaired.
I would buy a rebuilt over a used one anyday.
I never had a rebuilt one go over $150.
Used = how used? or abused?
Better safe than sorry.
