Greet somebody with a smile & start a conversation. When approaching a person be pleasant & polite, smile then use the handshake or on their traditional gesture on greetings (example: Bowing of heads as a sign of respect & greetings). Topics should be basic. Since you're a foreigner of that country ask/ talk about the things that interest you & that person. (culture, people, religion, foods, etc...) Just put it in mind that there are people who are not that friendly to strangers. So just keep on searching for more friends. There's nothing to lose. Good luck! (- -,)

When you decide to take a trip there are many escorted trips that you can take which includes a tour host along with many other people who are also traveling with you as a group. Initially you are all strangers, but as time goes on, you will become familiar with your group members and have fun exploring and discovering all these new exciting places while on vacation. This way you are never really alone because there is always someone to talk to that will be participating and sightseeing all the same places that you are scheduled to visit. I have traveled on an escorted trip before and found it very fulfilling and fun! I hope that this information has been helpful to you.

I love to travel, I have been traveling a lot, and most of the time alone. Since in my tour travels, I always study beforehand where to go and what to do, I have never felt lonely. While it would be nice to immediately share travel experiences with somebody on a trip, like having somebody to giggle or laugh with when there is a funny experience, I nearly never ever had time to think of being lonely. By the time I stop after a day's trip, I am already too tired to think of anything else but sleep. My interest lies with old places, castles, buildings, museums, landscapes, fields, waterways, flowers, gardens and places unique to that country I am visiting.
I am kept busy by the sights. I ask questions when there is a need to and I usually find those people I meet kind enough to welcome foreigners in their land, especially if one tries to speak their language. So far, in the many countries I have been to, I only had one bad experience (that was in New Delhi), though not bad enough to discourage me from traveling.

You might try the option of Tour Groups.
This will get you associated with a group of people who will be with you during the entire trip. This gives you time to get to know them -- they won't be here one day and gone the next.

try going to a bar or something. just have a drink and maybe you'll find something interesting to talk about with someone. don't see how it could hurt. maybe try a cafe or teahouse if alcohol isn't your thing.
