Who knows alot about tree symbolism?

I'm getting ready to buy a Native American ritual flute, and the choice comes down to Cedar wood, or Walnut wood. Does anyone know any symbolism behind these two woods? Any Magickal properties or interesting mythology that would help me decide between the two?

The Native American Flute is an amazing instrument, don't let others deter you from learning! I play several flutes, but I love the cedar ones the most =) Cedar flutes do require a good deal of care, such as regularly oiling (non-toxic oil) inside the mouth chamber (and all over if you just want to make it pretty!). Walnut is a hard wood, and I prefer soft woods...I think they just sound...more cheerful? lol i don't know. But cedar also smells amazing, it stays with you while and after you play.

As for magical properties, I'm sorry to say I don't know any myths where trees feature prominently. But wonderful Mr. Scott Cunningham attributes healing, purification, money, and protection with cedar and health, mental powers, infertility, and wishes. As someone who plays flutes of both hard and soft woods and since it's late (early) I can go off the deep end a bit and not feel too odd, I feel warmth and empathic strength from cedar, like sun rises, new beginnings, and more of a physical strength with walnut but I would also link with dreaming, and like Scott says, wishes. Okay, hopes this helps some...it is a seriously beautiful instrument and I hope you enjoy it for years to come.

If you haven't already decided on where to get your first flute, I bought my first cedar (basic student flute, fairly reasonable price) flute from Laughing Crow Flutes (they have an online store...) and I still love it to death!

Cedar around here is traditional. (West Coast) I've made a cedar flute myself.

I wouldn't recommend you buy a Native flute. That is called cultural appropriation. You shouldn't take someones culture and use it for your own benefit especially if you don't know what it signifies.

Get involved in your local Native community. Someone there can probably teach you how to make a flute. Then they can teach you what it means and how to properly take care of it. This way you won't be stealing the culture and you will have the answers to your question.

By the way, making a flute is pretty simple.

And to call Native items magical is well spreading cultural ignorance at the least.

I would go for cedar myself. However, it is very demanding of care and handling. When people speak of cedar for any tool or instruement they speak of its heart of red and incense of life.
