Currently designed and am running 9 layers of defence at my corp job.

At home I normally run 2 to 3..

It all depends on what your idea of a layer is.
DNS,DHCP,TCP, etce etc etc can be given multiple layers just by themself. you can get to nearly 64 layers of defence is you really want to nail every layer down as a level.
I personally like to keep things simple..
