if your old video card is built-in on the motherboard then you have to disable it first if not then just uninstall the old one then replace it with your new card. insert the manufacturers cd then install its software. have you tried using other monitor? it could be the problem not your video card?

In the game options you can correct the gamma level. See if that is your issue. Should make the changes on the fly as you move the slide bar.
Make sure you have the most up to dat drivers also! ati.com

Don't worry about the bios if everythign is working once your at the OS level. BIOS's have been self changing to the AGP slot or PCIe slot for some time. Some newer motherbaords including highend motherbaords have to be changed manually.

Open up your computer and install the graphics card. then connect your monitor and turn on your pc.

Goto google, or your favourite search site and search for DRIVERS for your graphics card. like "ATI / SAPPHIRE Radeon 9250 drivers" and then download the drivers, and they will either come with an automatic installation, or you will have to manually install them.

To manually install, right click on "my computer" and goto properties, then goto:
Hardware>device manager.
then find your graphics card in the list, right click and select properties then click on
Driver>update driver
and point it at the driver you downloaded.

After the update, if the brightness problem hasn't been fixed, right click on your desktop and select properties and goto settings>advanced and you will be given options to adjust that stuff.

if you have a onboard video card, you can disable it in the bios. make sure you have your new card installed on the bootup or you will not see anything. it will not load drivers, you will have to do that. then adjust the refresh rate (usually done in the settings of the video card software once installed) and adjust the brightness as the later. most of the newer cards with software allow for all of this before altering the monitor
