Wnen I first heard "Uninvited" by Alanis Morissette, it made the hairs on the back of my neck stand up, especially the version where it ends suddenly. "Tears in Heaven" by Eric Clapton is another one. Check out "The Promise" by Tracy Chapman. I first heard that after beatle George's passing. It made me cry.
Though "Trapeze Swinger" is one of the best songs I've ever heard, I don't find it necessarily depressing. The group, Iron & Wine, is a virtually undiscovered priceless gem.
Others:
"Press On" by Robinella
"The songs we were singing" by Paul McCartney,(in light of how things turned out)
"While my guitar gently weeps" the acoustic version
"Healing Hands" by Marc Cohn
"Halleluia" by Jeff Buckley

and two old ones- "Laurie" by Dickey Lee, and "Last Kiss" by J. Frank Wilson and the Cavaliers.

But hands down, nothing beats "Overcome" by Live. They played that repeatedly during 9/11. It probably will be forever connected with that.

Mine is "I'll Stand By You" by the Pretenders. The lyrics are supposed to be comforting, but it's so sad if it's true for you, and you're all alone listening to this song.
