For selecting a friend the first and foremost thing that forms the base your very own mentality.
First question goes to yourself what is the good thing that you need him/her as your friend?
In general: following points should be observed for true friendship
1. He/She should be Open hearted, should not ply politics, lie or misguide
2. Should have good intelligence, presence of mind and helpful nature.
3. Should have empathy for others
4. Should not have any criminal background or friendship.
5. His/Her own family and background would give lots of tips that would be helpful in drawing out his/her nature and attitude
6. Should be brave and courageous, should be able to stand for truth
7. His/Her nature of proffession should not have any impact on friendship, though it carries the tag of status.

You should see the qualities that those people possess.

However, what we often see instead are those qualities we wished we ourselves possessed, whether or not they truly exist in our chosen friends.

"Be friendly with everyone but be friend with few" is a famous saying. So, I would suggest that in order to choose your friend, go for a caring, kind, devoted to your friendship, one who understands you, who may or may not be good in studies but is perfect in his character, doesn't slang and mind that you wont get spoiled in his/her company as there is also one more famous saying "Show me your friends and I can say what you are".
