Physics is a very broad field with a variety of different specialties within it. You do not need to specialize in engineering to get a decent job. Pretty much all the physicists I know are smarter and better problem solvers than the engineers I know. Your son probably has no idea what he wants to do in his future. I am a grad student and I still don't know what I want to do. Physics is a good broad field that provides a foundation for almost any type of engineering, some types of chemistry, and other fields.

Sadly, most of the people I know who majored in physics ended up being burger flippers or pizza delivery guys...

The jobs just aren't out there.

If you go on for further education specializing into a specific field of engineering, I can't say if that will be better or not.
