I agree with both the other answerers. And wasn't it an awesome movie. In my opinion it was the best acting he has ever done.

Because when taken to the extreme, they can wipe out a native people's thoughts, feelings, beliefs and identity in the name of conversion to what the missionaries believe is the only way of living.

Because he was a scientist and had problems with what he could not see or touch as well as with people who saw the world differently than he did.
