Im interested in purchasing a Blackberry Pearl, but I do not want to pay an extra service charge for things such as Internet Browsing. Do I have to?

It depends on whom you buy it from. Some authorized Cingular dealers who offer the pearl at cheap prices can offer the pearl at that price becasue they require subcribers to sign up for internet which gives their store a bigger kickback from Cingular.

If you buy if from Cingular directly they will not require the internet package, but will charge you more for the phone if you don't get it.

I purchased mine though T-Mobile, and I started out without the BlackBerry unlimited add-on, so I know that you don't have to do it if you go through them. But after a while, I wanted to use my phone to check my email, and ultimately type this answer. So to answer your question, depending on the company you don't have to (with T-Mobile), but it sure does take away from the full value ofthe phone.
