Hearing about a 72 year old man beatened to death or Matthew Sheperd being killed or any number of other hate crimes out there actually makes me pretty scared sometimes. I don't really know how to defend myself, but I probably could knowing my life might depend on it. This is just not going out on a date. This is going out alone too. How can I protect myself? What if my date is the one I have to protect myself from because he was pretending to like me just to hurt me? How can I tell before he tries to hurt me?

Thank you for any advice or help.

A. Those kinds of things happen very rarely, but they are sensationalized by the media to make all minorities terrified that they're going to get beaten to death next time they leave their house.
B. If you are suspicious of your date, make sure you go to a public place, and don't accept any drinks that you didn't order yourself.
C. As for going out alone, just learn judo. I did, and it makes me feel much more secure. Bring your keys, too. A mugger is much less likely to attack twice if he has a key jammed into his eye socket.

Buy a gun. Take a concealed weapons course, and get certified. Obviously, don't date strangers, or people that you don't know about. In addition, take a self-defense course.

Other than locking yourself in the house after dark .. you may have to test the waters and follow your own intuition.

Fear is what you make of it. If we were all like that we would never leave the house. Straight or gay, fear that we allow to overcome us is ridiculous. The chances of this happening to you are so slim that it is not even funny. I think someone else said it correctly, just be aware of your surroundings and pay attention to what is going on around you.

Be alert to your surroundings, don't follow strangers home, and don't impair yourself too badly. Always have a cell-phone handy and make sure your friends know where you'll be and with whom.

Why not take a self-defense course? Does a body good.

JUST ENJOY YOUR DATE AND IF YOU HAVE TROUBLE JUST KICK THEM IN THE NUTS. THAT HURTS.
