Carbon and charcoal are used for filtration in an aquarium. Carbon and charcoal are the same thing...sort of. Ok, quick science lesson. Charcoal is wood super heated to where there is no more organic material left. All you will have left is Carbon and other minerals. So that is how carbon and charcoal are the same...sort of. Carbon is not charcoal, but it is found inside of it, so many use the two words interchangeably. End Science lesson.

Basically carbon/charcoal attract certain chemicals and impurities and attach to them. So when water passes through your filter, the bad things go in but they don't come out. When chemicals and impurities attach to charcoal, they occupy its surface area. This is why you have to change your filter periodically because it literally fills up.

So there you go.

Enjoy the knowledge!

Carbon and charcoal are pretty much the same when talking about aquariums - carbon is just charcoal that's baked at a very high temperature.

They will remove some chemicals from the water, so they're useful for removing medications to treat fish for one thing. They will also help remove colors (when you use wood in the tank, sometimes the water looks brown or yellow) and odors to a degree. It's very porous and adsorbs (not absorbs) particles from the water by having them stick on its surface, so it should be changed on a regular basis.
