There's a discussion (in Spanish) about the origin of the surname in the linked webpage, below. Two possibilities are suggested.
(1) It's a term used to describe an inhabitant of a particular Spanish village which has a large population of rooks (a bad omen according to local superstition). The village is possibly Espeja de San Marcelino, and although the birds are commonly called rooks, they are actually choughs.
(2) It's of Latin American origin and means someone with body odour.
I'd go with the former, if I were you.
