thats when a diesel engine spins faster than it was designed to spin

it can hapen going down hill with a full load (in your bvd's)
in older diesels it would result in push rods bending and valve/piston contact,,thus scattering engine in the worst case
and serious diesel surgery in a moderate case and nothing at all for a light overspeed

but now we have tattletale computers to nark on us like dope fiends, the computers inside modren trucks keep a record of date and time and overspeed severity.
the end result is some one tells you eng overspeed
you bad bad man

It's a controller that keeps the engine from running away and sending pistons through the hood. Not a good thing to bypass or remove.
