I just gave my roommates 30 days' notice for my moving out (maybe it's even 32 days). They say that 30 isn't long enough, and I told them that 30 is the standard. They say they have never heard that before. I said that is the standard (it is not my fault that they don't know standard things in the world) and she said "Where is that written?" I said it is the standard--not the best answer to her question. I told her I'd find somewhere to prove that most people know about 30 days being the standard.
How might I go about doing this? besides asking around.

Also, they both signed my little written notice that says the date that I am moving out (30+ days from now), they signed it before telling me they 've never heard of 30 days being the standard or a good amount of time.

If they signed your paper stating your 30 day move out date, then you are off the hook.

Look it up on the Internet. Thirty days is standard because it is one month and that is how rent is (usually) paid. When you pay your rent, you would give a written 30 day notice. If someone evicts you, they do the same thing. They give you thirty days to vacate. If they still have your lease I am sure it is mentioned in there also.

if you are a month to month tenant 30 days notice will get you off the hook.
on the other hand, if you have signed a lease, and are not on a month to month, you are still on the hook for the rent weather you give 30 days notice or not. you can expect to pay a minimum of 3 more months weather you live there or not if they haven't found someone to replace you!
if i were you, if you have a lease, find them a room mate before you go or very shortly there after.....

Next time, have them sign the rental agreement and share the deposit.
