I play guitar, and I have a friend who plays bass. Sometimes we get together and play, and when we play covers, it sounds great. But when i start to solo, he has no idea what to do. Can anyone give me any good baselines for him to work off of? Try to stay away from that really overused blues beat, because i need something that can rock more.

Does he know any scales? He should learn them, because by learning them he can easily write basslines and improvise by using the scales. The book "Bass Guitar for Dummies" explains it all.

It's best to let him just improv based on what you're playing. Have him start by playing only root notes of the chord progression that you're playing, as he gets more comfortable he can add fifths and octaves and eventually smooth out the chord change with other notes.
Or, if you don't mind playing on top of his bassline, any song by the Police is a good place to start, Sting is famous for simple but great basslines.
