It sounds like your high beams only work if you pull the stalk and hold it. This usually means that your lights aren't coming on at all (check your dash lights, tail lights and marker lights to see if they are working.) You might have blown a fuse, or possibly the low beams in both headlights just happened to blow at the same time. It happens.

Try checking the bulbs first. If burned out, replace. If they are OK, check wiring to the bulb and check power by a multimeter. If it is automatic bulbs, check the sensor on top of the dash that detects light.

the switch is faulty. the light fuse is blown. the hi beam you are getting is the one used for flashing to pass or overtake

your low beam bulbs are burnt and you need to look at the switch for your low/high. thats my guess

it sounds like you may have a bad light switch on it,or the multifunction switch,has gone out on it,it would have helped to know a year make and model of what your working on,maybe i could have given a better answer on it,good luck.
