Was he really hit with an apple at all, or is this just an interesting story? First, he already would have known of Galileo's earlier work with dropping weights from towers (and similar early empirical physics, which had been published). Secondly, like most good theoretical physicists, he had an ability to visualize thought experiments, i.e., to work things out in his head. He was the co-inventor (with Leibnitz) of calculus, which he figured out in his head (the inside) without being hit by any apple (on the outside). But it is a nice story.
