Our divorce hearing was last Wednesday with my ex-husband attending. I had waived my right to appear as it is not a contested divorce and I am out of the country. I heard nothing from the lawyer but a message that the divorce would be granted but the judge needed to look over the separation agreement and finalize it. I called them to clarify and got a secretary and never got a return call. I have emailed them with no response. It appears that after the hearing was over, they've dropped us like a hot potato.

I am engaged and awaiting the decree so that we can obtain the license, and this lack of info is very frustrating.

How soon after the hearing can I expect the judge to sign whatever she has to sign so that the divorce is final and I can get a copy of it to prove that I am divorced? I figure I can get a copy from the clerk's office even if I never hear from the lawyer again, but how soon can I get it?

NDO- Just check with the Clerk's Office. Often a Judge makes a ruling and it is sent to the Clerk's office to be recorded and they would know the status since Judges have a full docket of cases to preside over, and attorneys are the same way and are notorious for not being reliable to get timely information communicated.

Just give the case number and they will tell you if your Divorce has been disposed of and ruled on, then just go get your copy.

Hope this helps.

Normally the judge signs the divorce decree when the hearing is over. I would think that it would definately take no longer than a week after the hearing, judges don't like to have things laying around and would take care of it asap. I would call the clerk of courts office in whatever courthouse the hearing was in and ask them if the divorce decree has been filed.

Honey, normally between the first appearance and the final judgement there is a mandatory three month "cooling off" period. They do this in case someone has a change of heart. I understand your situation and I'm sure that you've both moved on, however, the law is the law. The best advice I can give you from what I've seen through years in the courthouse, is to contact your soon to be ex and have him fax you a copy of the minutes from that hearing. (each party should have received a copy even if by mail) On the bottom, there is usually a date given for return to receive the final judgement. IF there is no date, look for the words Judgement of Divorce or the initials JOD anywhere on that form. If you see them, go to the state's website where you filed for divorce and click on their Circuit Court Access link. From there you can enter in your personal information and find out the status of your case.

I wish you luck hon!

I think it has a lot to do with where your at, but when I got my divorce (which was uncontested, he wasn't present) the judge signed it that same day. And it was up to me, to get a copy of the divorce decree to my ex.

I did my own divorce and the judge signed the day I went to court.

I have just received my default divorce judgement today. When will I get the divorce decree?

It depends on where this was filed, but being it was uncontested it should probably be about three weeks to a month.
