Maybe because theist is pronounced differently to atheist. The atheist makes the ei sound like "e" instead of "a" but I'm not totally confident that that is the reason. Perhaps it is true, as creatrix suggests, that atheists are for some reason better spellers. If it were it would certainly result in atheist being spelt incorrectly more often as atheists use the word theist most often while everyone uses the word atheist.

Actually the origin of the word Toilet came from Rome or Greece and was originally called a Latrine. So technically toil has nothing to do with it.

"Toilet" is not connected with the word "toil" at all, as I'm sure you know. I think you were just making a humorous observation. I hadn't noticed that before. Very interesting.

And you're a newcomer to this site, too! That's a good beginning.

The word toilet comes from the French word 'toilette', meaning cloth or linen. This word, in turn comes from the Latin 'tela' meaning a web.
The word actually means :- a cover over a dressing table; mode of dress; a bag or case for night clothes.
In the 19th century it was used to describe the act of dressing or grooming ones-self. Somewhere along the way it transposed to describe the water closet (WC) and the act of using it.
