It brings back a lot of memories from my teen years. Yes I started smoking at the age of 13. I figure that you are going to get a lot of self-righteous answers saying things like these kids are stupid. Well, guess what.....That's part of growing up. This is not a perfect world and most kids have to grow up learning things on their own. You implied in your question that it is a stupid thing to do, and you are right. My question to you might be, What give you the right to judge? With all the press about smoking everyone knows the risks. I don't mean to offend but if it is not your kids doing it. Mind your own business and let these kids learn things on there own.

I think that you have voiced many of my opinions. The other factor is peer pressure. Teens, at this point in their lives, really have no true concept of death. They believe it will always happen to the other person or that the statics are so far in the future that a cure will be discovered by the time they reach the age of danger. They suffer from youthful ignorance, hopefully they will trash the addictive cigarettes long before crisis stage. Even then it may be to late.

I guess it never changes. It was 'so cool' to smoke when I was young. Now, in my late 40s, it's not so cool, but addiction to nicotine is a terrible thing. I've tried to quit more than a dozen times and never succeeded. I wish kids could see what it will be like when they're my age. Between the hubby and I we spend upward of 100 bucks a week on cigs. Think of what we could do with that money if we could just quit. Maybe one of these days they'll come up with help for people who are so addicted they just can't do it.

Sorry, I read the answers you have received and I disagree. I began smoking in Junior high school because that was the way to be cool. I remember sitting in front of my vanity every night and trying to inhale, coughing, gagging and putting the cigarette out. I wanted to be like everyone else!! Yes, even in my health class 40 years ago was saying smoking was bad and could cause cancer. Who cares when you are 16 and want to fit in??? I smoked for 38 years and stopped 5 years ago this month. One of the hardest things I have ever done. I think you are wrong, it is still cool or kids wouldn't still be doing it. We are not convincing them it's not. That's what I think.

I just wonder where their parents are? you can smell smoke when someone walks in the door. If you smell the smoke maybe you should pay a little more attention to your child and who they are hanging out with. Its very easy for minors to get ahold of cigaretts these days. I smoked like twice and my mom smelled it on me immediately, I was punished for a very long time, and I havent done it since then. Im now a parent myself and when I go out in public, I find it extremely rude for people to smoke around my newborn son. Nothing good comes from smoking. It doesnt benefit you in any way. Its bad for your health, it looks dumb, it smells bad, and its not fun...it just doesnt make sense to even start smoking.

Last year I saw a kid smoking at dismissal, I was in 6th grade, and he was pretty short, I'm guessing he was in 6th grade too. I felt like punching him in the face, or at list printing out a fact sheet about the dangers of smoking and giving it to him. For a minute I actually considered running to the nearest drugstore paying someone to buy me a nicotine patch, or gum that helps you quit, and then stuffing the gum in his mouth or putting the patch wherever it belongs. But this year I heard that one of the boys in my class is on crack, and smokes, and drinks plenty of alcohol. This morning he said "I'm probably gonna die before I'm 15" I felt like punching him, I mean he's 12! He really needs to get his life in order.

unfortunately i started smoking at age 12 . i had and have a great family . they didn't find out till i was in my 20s . but i am a mom now and don't want my kids smoking. when i see these teens or preteens smoking i feel that they are making a mistake like i did . but unfortunately there isn't much you or i can do about it. they will get there hands on it anyway even if it is illegal.

I look at them and think, I remember when that was me. How badly I wish I could go up to them and tell them what's in store. All those trips to the doctor that could be avoided, if they'll quit now what they're starting. I'd like to tell them that someday it's really going to hurt them and what a senseless habit it is. I'd like to tell them it's much harder to quit than to start.

Judge not, comes to mind for me. A truly good person realizes that there are things we do not understand, and reasons why people do things, that we can not understand. To judge is ignorance, to understand is compassion.
BUT, it is so interesting how people look down on smokers when eatin meat is a sure precursor to colon cancer, and heart disease.

I think it's a shame.I agree with you on they're going to regret it. But, I also remember that as a teenager, you feel invincible, unfortunately, we know that isn't true.
