Let's examine these moves in the last few years:

Theodore to COL
Smyth to NYI
Norstrom to DAL
Guerin to STL, to SAN
Tkachuk to ATL
etc.

The vets are getting shuffled around like.....like....jelly beans in a jar.. . . .

How do you feel about this current trend in the NHL?

Welcome to the 'new' NHL. You can look to the NFL to see where salary caps are going to take this league. Teams will no longer have true identities as 20%-30% of the league will change teams year in and year out.

Stories of athletes playing for only one team in their careers? Forget about it. Average NHL careers will suddenly consist of 6 uniform changes, not 3.

Average fans will be hard pressed to keep up with their favorite team's roster, much less the entire league. "When did so and so go to such and such team?" will be the new NHL fan's mantra.

The salary cap is a cruel mistress, and 'rental' players are becoming increasingly common. I agree with an NHL analyst who said there should be a rule that prohibits players from resigning with a team if they were traded from that team near the deadline that past season. This will discourage 'rental' players and keep players on teams longer.

Loyalty is not even a factor in today's NHL...veterans are considered commodities to be traded to a team that is "contending" that year or a very young team that needs guidance...the players certainly aren't arguing overly loudly against it...the days of a Stevie Yzerman type player are over, and it is not a good thing...sigh

Its the same in all sports except baseball. There, its simply called free-agency. Teams know they can "rent" a player for a playoff run and decide whether or not to sign him after the season is over.

Thats a salary cap for you, its not a trend its just the way teams have to operate now.

For all the sniveling, pre-lockout, that 'players have no loyalty to their teams...' and the rest of that drivel, now look! Nobody stays anywhere. Bettman is killing our game, and clueless Corporate Owners are too greedy and stupid to fire him.
