my uncle told me that as a kid a fisherman demostrated that crabs dont feel pain. the fisherman placed a crab in boiling water, placed a board by the pot and then extracted the crab with the board. when crab was extracted, it proceeded to wak back twords the boiling water.

so do crabs feel pain or not?

crabs have a slower rate of perceiving heat. They have a much different nervous system than we do but scientist belief they do feel pain, just not the same as people do. Here is a link.

@ TigerTracks: Your facts are quite off the mark. "Every living organism has a nervous system"??? Really? What about bacteria, plants, ...

Besides, the possession of a nervous system is not necessarily proof that an organism can feel pain. Lower organisms like insects have much simpler nervous systems than mammals; in particular, they don't have the large brain to process information the way we do. It is unclear whether such an organism can feel pain, and if so, to what extent. My own understanding is that an insect would get a simpler stimulus than "pain" sent through its neurons (pain is a feeling; it is the *response* to a stimulus). I don't know how this translates to crabs.

Crabs cover themselves in a hard shell that is resistant to heat. If a leg is stretched the soft part gets exposed and pain is felt. So crabs prefer to stay at places not reachable by humans.

Reality: Even trees feel pain and react strongly when the person who inflicted the wound returns to it or comes too close.
