I bet my friend $100 that it was 9'11'', which is what I was told at the "Ripley's Believe It or Not! museum in Branson, Missouri. As I live in northern Illinois, it is impossible for me to get proof, so could you please give a link/source?

The tallest man ever recorded was Robert Wadlow of Illinois who at his death was 8ft 11ins, that's 2.71m. He died in 1940 at the age of 22.

Strictly speaking, the tallest man ever recorded was Goliath, who in 1 Samuel 17:4 was recorded at six cubits and a span. A cubit is about 18 inches and a span about 9 inches, meaning that Goliath was 9 feet 9 inches tall.
