Massachusetts is the only state with gay marriage. Several others have "domestic partner" arrangements.

How come people haven't figured this out yet?

Yes, there is ONLY ONE state/Commonwealth that allows gay "Marriage" BUT those marriages are ONLY for Massachusetts state/Commonwealth residents and are NOT portable to other states. Meaning, if a same-sex couple who is married in MA moves to ANY other state, their marriage is NOT recognized!

This holds true for the other states which now allow Civil Unions or Domestic Partnership agreements.

Why?

All because of DOMA (Defense of Marriage Act.....signed into law by CLINTON....the turncoat)

Until we get DOMA either repealed or found to be unconstitutional, there will be NO Federal recognition of gay marriages.

Gay marriages are accepted by some citizens in all U.S. states. They have been for years. Look at the casual acceptance of Gertrude Stein and Alice B. Toklas. It's just a matter of the law catching up with public opinion.

Massachusetts is the only state to legalize same sex marriage.
The states of Vermont, Connecticut, and New Jersey do not have same sex marriage, but do have civil unions which have similar but not identical rights of marriage.
California has a domestic partnership law that provides most (but not all) spousal benefits to unmarried couples. Hawaii, Maine, and the District of Columbia have laws that provide partial benefits to unmarried couples.
All of these laws apply to state benefits only and are unrecognized in other states due to the 1996 passage of the so-called Defense of Marriage Act which prevents the federal government from conferring any rights to same sex couples and prevents other states from applying the full faith and credit clause of the United States Constitution as well as preventing any federal benefits or recognition of these unions.
