To the outside with power work on controlling the puck and stick with your outside hand and arm and using your inside arm to force the defenceman out

I'm going to assume, with no offense intended, that you're new to hockey based on your question. Generally defensemen who someone like yourself would be playing against don't have the confidence or the coordination to play the forward properly. They'll tend to look at the ice to see what you're doing with the puck. The best way to beat the defense in this situation is to do a quick little deke (pull the puck from your forehand to your backhand and then quickly bring it back to your forehand) and then explode past the defender. As a defenseman myself, I can tell you that when I was first learning how to play, that was the move that I was beaten by most often. Nothing difficult by any means. Just simple and effective. Good luck to you.

I would highly suggest buying the newest hockey news with Peter Forsberg on the cover, and reading the very back page...it's a skate ad, feauturing Ovechkin, but it kind of made me laugh!

It's three steps for beating a defenseman;
1- Approach defenseman.
2- Lower shoulder and skate through opposing player.
3-Move to open ice and score
4- Celebrate

I know it's just a silly ad...so to really answer your question:

I would suggest talking to your coach, or going to some hockey camps. Every defenseman plays basically the same, if you are at a low level, chances are they will be watching the puck, so if you can decieve them with stickhandling, that would be great. If you are playing at a higher level, the defenseman are smarter and look at a players chest to determine where the player is going to move to next.

Some things that help beat defenseman are:

1- Quick puckhandling (evasive)
2- Change of speed ( start of quick, then speed up to go around them)
3- Judge your opponent, if they are watching the puck, stickhandle around them, if they are watching your chest, try and use a body fake...if their gap isn't very good, ie, to close to you, just fake to one side and skate quick to the other

Good luck:) I hope I helped a bit!

Read, react and use your options. The object is to develop a scoring chance not necessarily beat the D man. If he backs off him as a screen and shoot. If he is near you and the ice is open behind him try to use deception (stick handling/quick moves) to take the ice behind him. If at all possible use a teammate to create an odd man advantage and develop a quick give and go.

Get as much speed going forward as you can...odds are not many defenseman can skate backwards as fast as you can forward. Let the defenseman make the first move, and move around him when he does make the move, if the defenseman doesn't ever make a move he will eventually back into his goalie and give you an empty top shelf.

I've always enjoyed the push the puck through their legs and go around them move. Just dont push it to hard where as the goalie could freeze it or play it. If you pull it off though it really sykes out the goalie. (I am a goalie) You just have to build the speed on how to do it.
