If he was four years old, I would say he died of old age. Most likely his heart gave out. I doubt it was anything you did. Four is quite old for a guinea pig. I'm sorry you lost a beloved pet. I lost my hamster on Valentine's Day of this year. She did show signs about 2 days before she passed on. We think she had diabetes though. I don't know much about guinea pigs and don't know how much attention they need as far as getting out of their cages and getting some exercise. I do believe that if a person owns a pet, they need to spend some time with it each day or every other day.

4 years is the average life span of a cavy (guinea pig). They are very sensitive to weather and noise, a sudden noise could cause a heart attack. When feeding you should stick to the alfalfa pellets that you can get at any pet store, carrots and greens should be used sparingly as a treat but not too much as it can cause intestinal problems. Remember to feed your cavy mostly guinea pig feed, lots of fresh water and keep them away from drafts(cold air), you'll probably increase the lifespan by 2 to 3 years. Under perfect conditions a guinea pig can live as long as 8 to 10 years, but I've only seen an 8 year old guinea once at a friends house ( she was an authority on Rabbits and Cavies). I hope this helps.

I don't believe you made him so sad that he would die. Question for you though. Is he in the same cage that your other guinea pigs died in? That could have been the problem or he could have died from old age. You do need to pay attention more to your animals though. I had a problem with my dog when I had a baby, she didn't last long even though I tried everything. Don't worry about it though, its not your fault though that the guinea pig died, it was most likely his time to go.

I doubt it was your fault, and it sounds like he had a fairly easy, quiet death, and didn't suffer.
However, if you think about getting a replacement animal, do to think long and hard as to whether you will be able to give it the love it deserves. Guinea pigs should have at lease 30 mins-an hour of attention a day! that helps them bond with their owner, keeps them occupied and tame, and also helps the owner know his/her pet. What signs of illness might you have noticed if you had spent more time with him?
Again, I'm not saying it was your fault, 4 years is a good age, but next time maybe consider getting something that requires less work, maybe a fish.

1. He might have seemed energetic, but secretely sick. It's a defense mechanism in many animals, and it's usually apparent in larger ones like dogs (because they are not generally prey) but small animals will pretend to be lively even when deathly ill sometimes because it's what keeps them from being singled out as the "frail or sick" in the wild.
2) Guinea pigs need Vitamin C pretty much constantly. They can get by on a small amount when they are young, but they probably have a harder time getting enough as they get older. If you get anymore guinea pigs, either find a vitamin C supplement or feeding them oranges. (They love oranges) I'm not sure why guinea pigs need this vitamin, as other small animals don't seem to as much, but I hope that helps

Maybe he was going so sad like you said or he caught an illness that go unnoticed. Your last guinea pigs maybe left the germs they had when the sickness attacked them and passed to him. They maybe mixed and formed a new illness that goes unnoticed.

Maybe it was too old.
I've heard that hamsters usually die while sleeping so its probably the same things with guinea pigs.
You might want a bird or a dog or a cat or something.
They live longer and its easier to tell if they are sick.
