if you are making a t-shirt and want it to have words on it, what is the best way to do the lettering?

Definitely hit up the craft store for iron-on, varsity-style letters. If you want it extremely vintage, you can go over the lettering (when it's on and sturdy) with a bit of bleach and sandpaper (put some bleach on the sandpaper and rub it over the letters gently). It may take you more than a few times to perfect it, but it does give a nice vintage look to old and new shirts.

The lettering I think should be kinda gothic like, with all the curls and those type of stuff...
