Referring to academic papers, it is very wrong.
In the field of academics, students are required to write papers in the process of their education. By researching and writing original papers they are learning. If others do their work for them they are cheating everyone especially themselves.
School work is a progressive experience and each part of it adds to the information they need to learn in order to gain the proficiency to progress to the next level. By having others do their work and then signing their name to it, they learn nothing and hinder their own progress. By claiming authorship of what is not their own, they are are not only a cheat, but a liar as well.
One thing I can say is that I went through 20 years of school from elementary school through a masters degree doing my own papers, some excellent, some good, some bad and some atrocious, but never-the-less, all my own work and I am proud to know that my degrees were gotten by my own efforts, not gained through thievery, cheating or lying. Is your honesty in question? Can you be as proud of yourself?

Yes, of course it's unethical!!! Cheating is cheating, regardless of what you call it, and if you're looking for excuses for doing so, then you've asked the wrong person. Just because people have more access to venues that make cheating possible (such as all those essay websites, yahoo answers, the Internet in general), doesn't make it right -- and for that matter, people who resist these should be admired all the more for their creativity and boldness in coming up with their own concepts, words, and ideas (now there's a novel concept! lol).
Hope this helps you!!!! :D

If it's for a grade, it is completely unethical to submit a paper with your own name on it, written by someone else. Every school has a policy or honor code against it. Plagiarism is thievery.

No, it is not unethical to write someone else's paper. It is, however, unethical for that person to submit as his/her own.

Yes, its unethical because its a lie and a deception. Worst, its an injury to the supposed beneficiary because they don't grow intellectually by having someone else do their thinking.

Well you're in essence helping them to lie and misrepresent themselves. Why would you want someone else to get your merit?
