Most of the 80s Merc diesels have been pretty rock solid. Well, the 80s was probably Mercedes' peak overall. Yes, newer technology came out, but quality started going down once the 90s hit and they're at a pretty low point right now.

Trouble free? well I would have to go with a 240D and an early to mid 1980's 300SD (w126)

My 1992 S350 (W140) gets 30 MPG and that's pushing 5000 lbs (with me and a full tank of fuel) of metal around. But trouble free it is not.
I talked my lady friend into buying a '05 Jettta Diesel and on road trips we get an honest 60 MPG. ( Let the Hybrids try to claim that)

80 model 240d.I have a 300sd that gets 34mpg.diesels after 1986 are trouble,aluminum heads.
