I would have no trouble shooting a Hyundai!

Seriously though, there are many different reasons for the light to come on.
Just about anything that has to do with the fuel injection system or the emission system can cause the light to come on. A loose gas cap can cause the light to come on.
You need to get the code read by a shop or a parts store and go from there.

I own a Hyundai and my check engine light is on also.I have bad plug wires as long as it's dry I'm OK but the minute it rains my car won't start. So I need new plug wires. So I been told. I hope yours isn't serious.good luck.it also comes on if your low on fluids.I use to leak coolant and what it was at that time the pipe leading to the fan was leaking and I just got the mechanic to cut it off and plug it up. don't really need it.but that you will notice as where ever you park your car there will be a spot of leaked fluid, good luck.hope this may have helped you a bit.

It can be due to alot of different things. Can be for maintence, or something wrong with the vehicle. Most of the time it is related to an emission problem, like an O2 sensor going bad, or out of specs. This is the most common problem that I've seen in my career as a mechanic. How this is set, is due to your vehicle computer that monitors the system of your vehicle. The only way to be sure what is causing the problem, is you need to use an OBD scanner. You can either buy one, or go to your nearest automotive shop and they can pull the code(s) out for you and give your the meaning of the code(s). From their you can get an estimate on what it will cost to fix, or you can try to fix the problem yourself if your mechanically inclined and have the tools to do so.
