Paul Kariya is a Nashville Predator hockey player. He is #9. He has a capitol "A" on his left shoulder of his jersey. What does it stand for? Kimmo Timonen has a "C" on his jersey and that stands for "captain." Does the "A" stand for Assistant Captain or something? Sorry for sounding stupid. Please help.

I'm pretty sure the A on Kariya's jersey stand for amazing...

although there is an outside chance that it actually stands for alternate captain.
in the nhl the only player "officially" allowed to confront the ref is the captain. should he be unavaliable for any reason, either of the 2 or 3 alternate captains are allowed to step in and take over those duties.
Usually they have other roles and duties involved in leading practices and such, but it differs from team to team.

but that sounds like a hogwash answer, go with amazing... I can't see it being wrong..

The 'A' stands for Alternate Captain. Each team is allowed one player as a team Captain and two Alternate captains.
They are the players that can talk to the referees during a game without making any problems worse. When a referee goes into his circle on the ice, the captain or alternates are the only players allowed to speak to him.
If a team captain is not on the ice, an alternate can talk to the ref.
The team captains are usually voted for by other players or can be appointed by the coach. It is considered an honor to be a captain or alternate.

The A stands for Alternate Captain, many people believe it means assistant captain but really it means alternate captain, which means that if the captain is not available for the ref to talk to, then one of the two alternate captains for that game or that specific time will be the ones talking to the ref and takin up on the captain duties

The "A" stands for- A HOMO! He is a wimpy little cry baby NHL forward! I wish Kevin Stevens of the Devils would have ended his whining and crying back in the cup finals years ago! He might actually have some respect now with the Preds since they have an excellent team! His problem, as well as his boyfriend, Teemu Selanne have in common is that they played for the Disneyland Mighty Ducks! They will never get my respect even if they win a cup! They complain like a little female tennis player when they get hit!
