first of all I am from Ethiopia. A lot of my friends or people in my school always say am i mixed or w/e because of my hair and that i am light skinned. I think alot of people get the impression of africans as tall, dark, and short kinky hair. It really gets on my nerves. But ive also noticed alot of black people like in my school hate admitting that they come from africa. they would make these excuses saying "im puerto ricon" or im mixed with native american and indian or blah blah. Why do people hate admitting they are from africa? is it embarrising or something? im pretty proud of it.
I think people might be embarresed because of alll that sh** the media shows them...honestly i think people believe in whatever they see or hear? what u think?

i don't know if you heard about that show on pbs or not. some famoud african americans, like oprah and whoopi goldberg, paid someone to to a dna cultural search of their bloodlines. they recently discovered what african ancestry they have.

most black people (americans, not africans) do not know about their heritage. all of those records were lost, left behind, or destropyed in the days of slavery. a few families have kept ancient heirlooms that give clues about their past. nowadays, with new technology in genetics, it is possible to find out what your lineage is....but how many people have the money or the time to do this?

but you are right...part of it is that some black people would rather say "i'm half this or that" than anything else. but i think a big part of it is that they don't know where in africa their ancestors orignated.

I wouldnt say they are embrassed, but when you have lack of knowledge, you tend to think like that. People like that need to pick up a book or watch the history channel or find some kind of resource that reflects on their roots. When your not informed certain things, you tend to deny everything in a whole and go with what you know.

I was born in Nigeria and moved here when I was very young, even though I am American now I still always acknowledge my African ancestry. African people are beautiful and we come in all shades, most Black Americans have a slave mentality that White is beautiful, light is almost right and Black is just ugly.

I think if I were all African, not mixed, I wouldn't have a problem with saying that my ancestors were from Africa, but this isn't the case, why claim one part of your heritage and disown another? Besides I'm American, I was born here.
