Now use this direct no dilluting, on the ant hill is a main entrance point it's not at the top, it's located on the side of the hill & can be 2 points (just watch the ant's). Pour 2 tble spoons of malation into the entrance (s) this should take care of them, if in 1 week the problem still exists, reapply.
Malation is safe for the enviroment it breaks down in a week. Yes your giving full dosage, but it is directed to a small spot.
It's used in all vegetable production farms (water soluable).

Grits. Go to the super market and buy instant grits. If you've got fire ants, I'm going to assume you know what grits are. ;-)
Here's how the grits work. You pour a few table spoons around the mound. The ants recognize this as food. They gather it up, take it down, munch on it and feed it to the queen. Then, after ingesting the grits, the grits expand and burst their little tummies. Kills the queen, kills the mound. :-O
Using grits takes a little more patience than using the chemicals. You may have to feed the mound a few more times, but it works. It's safe and it's very economical. Instant grits are about a hundred times cheaper than the chemicals.

I don't know where you are from, but here in QLD, Australia if we have fire ants we can contact the local council or Department of Primary Industries and they will come out and deal with it for you.

Vector Control will tell you to poor lots of boiling hot water on the ant hill. Seems like you'd have to use a lot of water, though, and lugging around several gallons of scalding water is dangerous. Heck, I'd vote for the kerosene idea...more fun.

Boric acid is a mild toxin available in drug stores. Soak cotton balls in solution of 1 teaspoon boric acid and 6 tablespoons sugar in 2 cups water. Place the balls in plastic containers with lids. Punch some holes in the lid. Place around the mound and wait for them to carry the toxin back to the nest.

Kerosene will work, but don't use gasoline. The fumes will sometimes travel quite a distance before the match can be lit, resulting in a long flash of fire when it ignites. Very dangerous. I saw it happen once.
