I bought a Dell Inspiron 8500 from a friend, He showed me that he was able to log on the internet, wirelessly. I brought it home and I tried logging in to it, and its not working. Even when I go under control panel and select internet options, just a box comes with no selections or any other connections. Took it back to him and he said he has no idea what is going on, since it worked for him. I even troubleshooted with my internet provider and they still could not find the problem, the only thing they said was that the ip address was not accurate since it started with a 169(?). Can anyone help, I am starting to think DELL SUCKSSSSSS!!!

IF you have a wired connection it should be very easy to reset and reaquisition the IP.
However, if it is set for wireless there are dozens of issues. Most of these are part of the security systems, but you have to uninstall them and start over. There even be passwords hidden or MAC addresses or WEP encriptions.
Is also sounds like he is using the Dell wireless manager software instead of the window.
I do the same and I love it. I also have so much protection set up it would be a nightmare to run through it.

The best option if you don't have a close friend is got to the Dell kiosk in the mall. The guys there are usually geeks and love to help. Especially a pretty face.

It depends, are you using the same kind of internet your friend has? LIke if he has ethernet and you have dial up, you might not have a modem to connect with. Do you have the right hardware, the right software? Is your IP configured properly? Maybe the 169 is part of your friends account. I would take it to a repair shop or friend who knows computers and let them play with it, the repair shop will prob charge $35.00 but they should be able to get you connected.

Maybe a silly question... But you do have a wireless router with internet connection, right?

If so, perhaps the security keys are not the same on your router and the new computer? Maybe your router has mac filtering enabled? Maybe the new computer just needs to be configures for your wireless network?

#1 - dell does tend to suck at times, but all brands do.
#2 - did u setup a connection?
#3 - try reformatting ur comp and reinstalling watever ver of windows u own. make sure u backup eveyrthing tho. then, see if it automatically connects as it shud if the wireless is built in. otherwise, i dunno.

best of wishes...

You have to set up your computer to work with your own internet network (wireless network). That's why it wasn't working i think.
