Go to any bank or mortgage lender with your financial documents paycheck, last year's taxes, place you work, savings account, credit card debt etc.. and they will pre-approve you so you know exactly what you can obtain in terms of a mortgage.
Then when you find the house you like (and it's no more than what they will lend you in terms of cash plus the down-payment u r going to give) and you got the mortgage.
