Sit up is an exercise. Sit down is redundant.
So, "why is it redundant exercise and the result is the same?"

Because I still end up at the fridge for a snack!

Why is it when you say that an alarm went off, it actually went on? Thats why you can hear it right? Because, it went on. If an alarm went off, shouldn't that mean it doesn't work at all? Sit up means you maintain posture and your body was brought to full attention, sit down means you got off your feet and sat down.
