In Japan, it was known as Space Battleship Yamato, and has been referred to by some in the anime (Japanese animation) community as the "grandfather of anime". All I know is that it was so well written and the plot was so appealing that it pretty much turned me off to Star Wars and Star Trek as a kid.

Yamato was the Japanese name for the ship. I believe the US version was called the " Argo." Correct me if I am wrong.

I used to watch this show religously growing up in the late 70's and the early 80's.

I sure do! I have some of the original comics, and a LOT of the english ones. Man, good call, I haven't thought of this series in years. Good memory.
