I have an Emachines laptop and when I disconnect the power cord to use it cordless and power off of the battery, it only lasts for about 30 mins to a 45 mins. Is this a normal range of time or should the battery last at least an hour and a half or so? Is there anything I can do to extend the battery life?

Laptop batteries have a limited lifespan. The longer you have it, the worse it will get. Most computers will get at least 90 to 120 mins on a charge, if not more, when new. A couple years old and it can start rapidly declining.

Replacing the battery with a new one is the only fix.

You can extend the battery life in general by not using usb or PCMCIA devices, make sure you have enough memory so your page file isnt being used excessively, don't use CD/DVDs, lower screen brightness, boot with power connected, etc.

There will be quite a few problems with it. If it really is an older computer (even a year is seen previous) the battery ought to easily be death. As batteries age, the quantity of juice they could carry is decreased. If it really is not any longer it, then the battery should be 'calibrated.' to attempt this, thoroughly drain the battery to 0%. Then cost the battery to one hundred%. that would favor to assist. If this does no longer do it, then the battery is growing older.

If you've had the battery a long time, yes you probably need to replace it.
However, there are a lot of internal systems that suck the power quickly:
USB devices
wireless network cards
screen brightness
printing
any program running in the background that is taking processor time.

shut down what you're not using and you can often add 50%
you can even set up a profile that is different when it is unplugged so you don't have to think about it.
