Sometimes they do and that is normally set up through the courthouse. Normally the towns that have the most are small towns that don't have enough public defenders. Call a few attorneys in your town and just ask them which system they have for probono work. They will know and tell you.

Each state varies but, in the bar code of ethics every lawyer in the states that do supply it have to do so many hours of pro bono work. You just have to qualify by state standards and your local library will have a listing of how to obtain the info to get it started. Ask at the reference desk.

You should try researching legal clinics and/or organizations (e.g., volunteer legal services) in your area that put potential clients in touch with attorneys that perform pro bono services. You can usually find different types of clinics and organizations that specialize in various types of services, for example, elder law, immigration, tax, etc.

Typically if they work pro bono it is rare. More often than not they will work on a contingency basis requiring no up front payment and taking a % of any settlement or judgment.

Just remember, you get what you pay for.
